Walking Routes of Alonissos

On this website you can find information concerning the 21 walking routes. You can choose the one you prefer and enjoy the beauty of the island.

1. Going to the port (Patitiri)
Duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes (round trip)
Description of the route: Beautiful footpath that follows down the orchards and arrives at Patitiri, the main village. Patitiri consists of relatively new homes that were built after the great earthquake of 1965. Life in Patitiri is concentrated around the port which is located in a lovely location facing the crystal clear blue sea and surrounded by cliffs. The route to Patitiri is a smooth descend free from areas of steep gradient.

2. Walk to the chapels of St. Ioannis & the Taxiarchs (Archangels Michael & Gabriel)

Duration: 30 minutes
Description of the route: This is a great short walk and a part of it follows the ridge of the hill with very impressive sea views from both sides. This route consists of several short paths, including a short steep one in the area that comes after the chapel of St. Ioannis

3. Sunset at Kalovoulo
Duration: 45 minutes
Description of the route: This is a short walk that leads to a point with spectacular views. The route is easy as the road goes around the base of the mountain. The best moment to take this walk is during the sunset as the whole place faces westwards.

4. Old Alonissos - Patitiri - Megalos Mourtias - Old Alonissos
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description of the route: A route that passes through agricultural areas, port Patitiri and beautiful pine forests before reaching a lovely beach perfect for a swim! Alongside this beach, there are many local taverns. It consists of several wide paths and dirt roads, including a short part paved with asphalt right before and after Patitiri village.

5. Old Alonissos - Gialia - Old Alonissos
Duration: 2 hours
Description of the route: This is a route leading to an old restored windmill located on the cliffs surrounding the small beach of Gialia. The road to the beach is winding and sloping, yet the gradient is gentle and smooth. Both sides of the road are spread with short bushes, and therefore walkers can enjoy unobstructed view over the cliffs and the windmill.

6. Old Alonissos - Kalovoulo - Red - Mikros Mourtias - Old Alonissos
Duration: 3 hours
Description of the route: This is an interesting route to the lighthouse which is located on the cliffs at the foot of Kalovoulos mountain. Most of the route follows paths with rocks and thorny bushes so it is recommended to wear long trousers and trekking shoes. A part of the descent is relatively steep. You may want to take a break and swim in the crystal clear waters of Mikros Mourtias beach before you continue with your hiking trip. It's a route for those who enjoy seeing places off the beaten track.

7. Old Alonissos – Kalovoulo Mountain
Duration: 2 hours
Description of the route: The route goes up to the top of Kalovoulos Mountain (behind Old Alonnisos). It is an incredibly beautiful, panoramic trail as Kalovoulo is the southern cape of the island and its top is elevated 325 meters above the sea level. The 360 degrees view this place offers is definitely worth the visit. You will mainly need to walk on a dirt road which is uneven at parts due to the rocky soil. It is recommended to wear long trousers and trekking shoes if you want to get to the top where there is a 300 meters high cliff overlooking the sea.

8. Old Alonissos – Panagia - Old Alonissos
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Route description: Route which includes many places with great views as well as three chapels within amazing natural scenery. As you go up towards the antenna of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE), you can enjoy stunning views over the Old Village and the sea, steep hillsides and ravines. When you find yourself on the other side of the mountain, the landscape changes and you can see the forested hills of Alonnisos and the eastern coast. This route comprises of several wide paths and dirt roads, including a short part paved with asphalt.

9. Walking up to the old village, Palia Alonnisos
Duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes (round trip)
Description of the route: This is an amazing walking route following the old cobbled road to the Old Village. The ascending route crosses the agricultural parts of Alonissos and offers wonderful views to the hikers.

10. Short walk to the small beach of Faros
Duration: 30 minutes
Description of the route: An ascending short walk which starts descending steadily as it passes through an area with pine trees till you arrive at the beach in the bay of the harbor.

11. Walk to the fishing village of Botsi
Duration: 1 ½ hours
Description of the route: The greater part of this route goes through inhabited areas. It goes up and down hills and stairs that lie among three little bays: Patitiri, Roussoum and Votsi. The port of Votsi is a charming small place for long walks alongside the crystal blue sea, dotted with fishing boats and surrounded by steep cliffs.

12. Round walk in Kato Chorafi
Duration: 1 hour
Description of the route: This route leads to a hilly area nearby Patitiri village. It goes through olive groves and pine forests and offers amazing view to hikers. It is comprised of several paths and dirt roads, including a short part paved with asphalt.

13. Patitiri - Gialia - Old Alonissos - Patitiri
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description of the route: This route descends till the beautifully restored windmill that overlooks the cliffs of Gialia Beach where you can pause for a swim. Then the trail climbs to Old Alonnisos (200 meters above sea level) and from there it descends again till Patitiri. It consists of several paths and dirt roads, including a short part paved with asphalt. The road down to the beach is winding, yet the gradient is gentle and smooth. Both sides of the road are spread with short bushes and therefore walkers going down the road can enjoy unobstructed view over the cliffs and the windmill. The path is not very steep, however, you will need to go up and down the hills quite a few times.

14. Patitiri - Old Alonissos - Megalos Mourtias - Patitiri
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description of the route: This path passes through crop fields, the village of Old Alonissos and beautiful pine forests to finally reach a beach perfect for a swim. On the beach there are several taverns. It is comprised of several wide paths and dirt roads, including some roads paved with asphalt.

15. Patitiri – Panagia at Vouno (Lady on the Mountain) - Patitiri
Duration: 2 ½ hours
Description of the route: Route which includes many places with great views as well as three chapels within amazing natural scenery. As you go up towards the antenna of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE), you can enjoy stunning views over the Old Village and the sea, steep hillsides and ravines. This small mountain is called "Vouno" (Mountain). If you keep walking towards the other side of the mountain, you will see the scenery constantly changing, with view over the wooded hills and the eastern coast. This route follows several wide paths and earth roads, including a few parts paved with asphalt. It also passes nearby the top of the small mountain (260m above sea level). As already described, the first part of the route goes uphill and the second one goes downhill back to the village.

16. Old Alonissos / Patitiri – Mega Nero
Duration: 45 minutes / 30 minutes
From Old Alonissos:
Starting point: The bus stop in Old Alonnisos.
Follow the asphalt-paved road to Patitiri village. After 200 meters, you will come across a sharp left turn. On the right there is a house by the road. Shortly after the house, on the right, you will find the beginning of an old path. After about 10 minutes of walking, the trail crosses a dirt road. Turn left along the the dirt road until you come across a road paved with asphalt. Continue straight ahead on the asphalt road until you arrive at a crossroad. The road on the right leads to Patitiri village and the road on the left goes to the antenna of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE). Follow the dirt road straight ahead and you will arrive at your destination.

17. Old Alonissos / Patitiri – Mega Nero - Spartines - Votsi - Rousoum - Patitiri / Old Alonissos
Duration: 4 hours / 3 hours
Description of the route: This route has a lot to offer. It crosses the agricultural countryside of Alonnisos with its olive groves, vineyards and vegetable gardens. It also crosses a forest, two beautiful beaches and three fishing villages: Votsi and Patitiri Rousoum. This is a route that is comprised of several wide and narrow paths, dirt roads and a few short parts paved with asphalt.  The ascend and descend are smooth.

18. Old Village / Patitiri – Mega Nero – Chapels of the Holy Unmercenaries – Tourkoneri – Old Village / Patitiri

Duration: 4 ½ hours / 4 hours
Description of the route: This route goes through the most picturesque landscapes of Alonissos. Surrounded by a beautiful pine forest, the two chapels of the Holy Unmerceneries are located on the edge of a cliff with amazing sea view. Tourkoneri Beach is very small and is located on a beautiful bay along with other small picturesque beaches. This is a route of wide paths, dirt and forest roads, without any steep areas. It  is ideal for those who love nature.

19. Old Alonissos / Patitiri – Mega Nero - Tourkovigla – Megali Ammos – Mega Nero - Patitiri / Old Alonissos
Duration: 6 ½ hours / 6 hours
Description of the route: This route goes up to Tourkovigla (348 meters above sea level), one of the places with the best view of the southern part of the island. Then it passes through a narrow ravine to reach the bay of Megali Ammos with its beautiful small beaches overlooking the wild and steep western coast of the island. It follows several dirt roads, wide and narrow paths leading to small beaches, as well as short forest paths. The passage through the ravine is relatively steep and rocky so it is recommended to wear trekking shoes. A particularly impressive route, but only for passionate hikers!

20. Old Alonissos / Patitiri – Mega Nero - Isomata - Agios Petros - Stenivala
4 ½ hours / 4 hours
Description of the route: This is a straight road leading to the picturesque fishing village of Steni Vala, in the south-eastern part of the island. In Steni Vala, you can have a rest at local restaurants and cafés or go for a swim in the beaches nearby. On your way back from Steni Vala, you should probably take a bus or taxi. If you decide to catch a bus back to the Old Village, make sure you reach your destination in time for the bus. If you prefer calling a taxi, use the phone booth in Steni Vala or ask one of the restaurant owners to do it for you.

21. Old Alonissos / Patitiri – Mega Nero – Megali Ammos – Megalo Horafi - Isomata - Agios Petros - Stenivala
Duration: 7 ½ hours / 7 hours
Description of the route: This is a route perfect for a day trip to the picturesque fishing village of Steni Vala, in the south-eastern part of the island. In Steni Vala, you can have a rest at local restaurants and cafés or go for a swim in the beaches nearby. On your way back from Steni Vala, you should probably take a bus or taxi. If you decide to catch a bus back to the Old Village, make sure you reach your destination in time for the bus. If you prefer calling a taxi, use the phone booth in Steni Vala or ask one of the restaurant owners to do it for you.
